Fishing and Species
The native "Redside" trout are hard-fighting beautiful fish. The river is rich with food. There are no hatchery trout. Some trips are booked around specific hatches and others are when you and your friends or family can all get away. Please give us a call with your interests. The steelhead fishing begins in July when the fish enter the lower river. The run continues into November and they do not spawn until the spring. There is is also an option for single night steelhead trips. These are done with jetboat access. There is no fishing from the boat on the Deschutes.

The Deschutes River is one of the most exceptional rivers in the West and the world. Its origin is the east side of the Cascade Mountains from which three different streams come together to make the lower river. A rich and cool river in a desert canyon is an oasis for fish, anglers and wildlife. It is totally a wild trout fishery, and the native redside trout are remarkably strong and beautiful. The legendary stonefly hatch, mayflies, caddis and chironomids are a wealth of food sources for trout. They don’t have to work too hard to be fat and happy.

Fly fishing for summer run steelhead begins in July. The long, hot days of summer require fishing the “dawn patrol” before the sun hits the water and then the late shift, fishing until an hour after sunset. Fishing continues on through the fall, offering daylong opportunities, until early December. Real summer steelhead fishing for hot fish, with a floating line, sunglasses, sunscreen and cold beverages should not be missed.

Trout and steelhead fishing can be done on day floats and multiday trips. The multiday floats for trout or steelhead give you access to water that is not available on day trips or by road access. This is the best way to fish the least-fished water. While camping, you are on the water earlier and later than most day trips. This is key because these are the prime times for fishing. Another option, just for steelhead fishing, is an overnight camp that is accessed by jetboat. You will fish below the day float water and be on the water at first and last light. Whether you have only a day or two or can get away for more time, the Deschutes is a magnificent place to fish.
